Sanctuary: A Special Pup in Search of a Loving Family
On a cold February night, a batch of helpless pit bull puppies was found abandoned in a box in an alleyway in St. Louis, Missouri. Among them was Sanctuary, a sweet little pup who faced a challenging medical condition known as Cerebellar Hypoplasia (CH). This debilitating condition impacts his motor functions, leaving him wobbly and unbalanced. Almost a year has passed since those harrowing days, and while his siblings have found forever homes, Sanctuary continues to await his happily-ever-after.
A Helping Hand
After being rescued, Sanctuary received the vital medical attention he needed at the Stray Rescue of St. Louis. His journey reflects the perseverance and dedication of both the rescue organization and his foster parent, Clare. Her unwavering support has been instrumental in Sanctuary’s development. “His wheelchair has made the biggest difference in his life,” Clare says, emphasizing the positive impact it has made on his day-to-day activities. With the help of the Full Support Walkin’ Wheels wheelchair, Sanctuary can now walk, run, and even chase his favorite lamb chop toys in the yard.
Why Sanctuary Needs You
Sanctuary is not just any dog; he embodies hope and resilience. His charming personality shines through his playful antics at home. Clare describes him as sweet, smart, and silly, traits that endear him to anyone who meets him. Yet, as he celebrates his first birthday, Sanctuary still longs for a permanent home where he can thrive and receive the unconditional love he deserves.
The Importance of Special Needs Awareness
Educating the community about dogs like Sanctuary is crucial. Many may not realize that dogs with special needs can lead fulfilling lives with the proper support. As pet care professionals—veterinarians, trainers, and advocates—raising awareness can inspire potential adopters to open their hearts to these remarkable animals. The pet care community has the power to change perceptions and help special needs pets find their forever families.
For Pet Care Specialists: How You Can Help
Veterinarians and vet techs can play a vital role in Sanctuary's story. By sharing information about conditions like CH and educating pet owners, they can foster a more inclusive environment for pets with disabilities. Pet nutritionists can also provide dietary plans that support mobility and overall health, further enhancing a special needs dog's quality of life.
